How we build the guides
This page explains how CapitalGainsTax.com researches, writes, checks and updates its capital gains tax guides, calculators and charts.
Sources we use
Guides rely on primary sources: the U.S. Code, Treasury regulations, IRS publications, IRS form instructions and IRS topic pages. Where a secondary source is used, it is named. Every guide lists its sources in a Sources block, and the full source list shows them in one place.
How a guide is written
Each paragraph is matched to the source passages that support it before it is written. Paragraphs that a source does not support are cut. Each guide opens with the direct answer, then covers the rules, a worked example taken from the sources and the questions owners ask most.
Calculators and charts
Each calculator states its formula inputs and the tax year of every figure, with a source for each. Figures tied to one tax year are labeled with that year. State tax is left out because the calculators use federal sources only.
Review and updates
A person reviews every page before it is published. Each guide carries a research notice with the date its sources were checked. Tax law changes, so confirm any rule with a licensed tax attorney or CPA before you act.
