About CapitalGainsTax.com
CapitalGainsTax.com explains how capital gains tax works when owners sell a business, real estate or private investments. It is a free research site from Family Office Club, founded by Richard C. Wilson in 2007.
Who we are
Family Office Club has run events for investors and family business owners since 2007. A 15-person team runs 30 events a year, including 16 in person, and has hosted more than 340 events since 2007. Richard C. Wilson founded the club and runs it with active investors and family business owners.
Why this site exists
Owners who sell a company, a building or a stake in a private deal often face the largest tax bill of their lives on a single day. This site puts the federal rules for that sale in one place: how gain is measured, how it is taxed, and the exchange, exclusion and installment rules that can change the result.
How the guides are built
Each guide is written from primary sources such as the U.S. Code, Treasury regulations and IRS publications and instructions. Software collects and matches source passages to each paragraph, and a person reviews every page before it is published. The sources for each guide are listed in the Sources block at the end of that page. The methodology page has the details.
Editorial independence
No firm pays to appear on this site, and no guide recommends a product or adviser. Talk to Richard is the only referral on the site.
