Capital gains tax estimator (federal, 2025 rates)
Enter your figures. Long-term gain is stacked on top of your other taxable income and taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% using the 2025 IRS table [CGT2-0180, tax year 2025]. Short-term gain is taxed as ordinary income [CGT2-10767], so you enter your own ordinary rate, because the KB has no complete sourced ordinary-rate table. The 3.8% net investment income tax uses the lesser of your net investment income or MAGI over the threshold [CGT2-0105, CGT2-3778, tax year 2025]. This is for 'other gain' only, not collectibles, small business stock or unrecaptured section 1250 gain. State tax is not included because the KB has no sourced state rates.
